Birthday Gifts 2012

As some of you may know, it was my 22nd birthday on Tuesday and so I decided to film a video showing you some of the gifts I received.

I hate posts without photos, so here is me and Molly on my birthday.

Remember to watch it in HD :)

Name Necklace

I have long been a huge fan of Sex and The City, and so naturally I have always wanted my own Carrie necklace. My problem was, with a name like Lydia, on the rare time I would find a place that sold name style necklaces they would only ever sell common names. That is why I was so excited to hear about NameNecklace.co.uk - a company who make name necklaces in their own professional studio. The necklaces don't come mass produced from a warehouse, each necklace is made from scratch and finished by hand. This is perfect for people with rare, unique names - or for people who have special requests in general such as a nickname or a specific word.

After browsing the site, looking at their extensive selection of necklace styles, I decided to go with the  Carrie Style Necklace  in silver. What I was really impressed with, is that for each style necklace you can download a file which shows you all the letters of the alphabet in that specific font, which makes it easier to envisage how your name necklace will turn out.

Below are some photos of how my necklace turned out...

I am super, duper pleased with it and I can imagine I will get a lot of wear out of it. I also think the chain is just the perfect length.

My necklace sells for £25, which I don't think is too bad a price considering it is essentially a piece of jewelry custom made for you. You can check out the site and get your own version here.

Lip Essentials

I am a really big lipstick fan, in fact I would rock hot pink lips every day of the week if I could, but I have to be honest my lips are terribly dry and lipstick can sometimes enhance that. To counteract this and make my lips super smooth, I have developed a nightly routine which helps keeps the flakys (ick!) at bay.

After cleansing my face I will dampen my lips with luke-warm water, take a small amount of Lush Mint Julips Lip Scrub on my finger tip and massage it in circles around my lips. Then I will rinse it off and pat my lips dry. To finish things off, I will then apply a heavy dose of Blistex MedPlus Lip Balm.

Do you have any products that are your lip essentials?

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation Review

This review is a bit of a tricky one - I have a sort love/hate foundation with the product in question. Back in early 2011 I bought my first tube of Silk Creme Foundation. I loved it instantly - great coverage, no SPF meaning it photographs really well, creme consistency meaning it feels comfortable on the skin, and it makes me slightly luminous and glowy. Things were going so well, but after about 2 months I found it just didn't work for me any more, it would look dry around my nose and forehead and I often found it hard to blend.  I would go back to it frequently - perhaps once or twice a month - just itching for me to fall in love with it again. When I had just about given up hope, this month I have totally fallen back in love with it - so here is my long overdue review!

The foundation is a gorgeous creamy consistency, which will glide on to your skin like a dream. It is very high in coverage in my opinion, and a pea sized blob is more than enough for a full face application. For the most natural look I find that applying it to the centre of the face with a Sigma F80 to begin with, and then dragging it out to the outer portion of the face works best. It ensure that no dodgy tell-tale foundation lines are present and it also helps you to not over do it and cake your face with too much product.

As for how it looks on the skin, I have included the photo above of me wearing it. I find it fairly luminous but not too shiny. I think it makes me look healthy but not at all like an oil slick! I love a luminous finish, however with this foundation I do feel it comes with a price - which is that it can feel quite tacky to the touch. I often feel like my hair can stick to my face a little in the wind if I don't lightly powder over it before leaving the house. I feel it is a great foundation for a night out or special events as it gives such a flawless look and contains no SPF so it will photograph nicely.

Finally, the shade range is a little poor. I currently wear the shade Creme Ivory - which I believe is the lightest shade available with a yellow undertone. As you can see from the swatch above, it isn't that light and I think people who are fair would struggle to get away with this. Although saying that, I have to say I find this foundation a bit of a chameleon. It matches my NC20 skin in the winter fairly well (a smidge too light perhaps), but in the summer if I tanned I can still definitely get away with this - it sort of warms up to match my skin tone. If I continue my love affair with this foundation, I intend to purchase my next tube in the shade Beige Ivory - after researching online I feel it may be a better match for me.

Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation currently sells for £33 and can be bought here.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this foundation if you are looking for a flawless base. However, I would say get a sample first as it is such a pricey product - plus, from my experience, Laura Mercier are very generous about giving samples away.

Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner

Today I am excited to be blogging about my most favourite recent discovery, which is the Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner.

It claims to infuse the hair with Soy and Tri-Wheat proteins to reconstruct, moisturise and protect hair from environmental issues. It also claims that the spray provides lightweight moisture and detangles hair - and I absolutely have to agree with this!

I flip my head upside down and spray the leave in conditioner around 6 times all over my damp hair, and it instantly makes my long, knotty hair easier to comb through. Once rough dried with a hairdryer, I can instantly see the results - the lightweight moisturising properties make my hair sleek and smooth, which is an absolute God-send for my frizzy locks! Usually my hair is a little wild and voluminous until I straighten it a little to make it more sleek. I feel like this product completely transforms my hair, more than any other hair product I've used - including oils such as Moroccan Oil. Another thing I love about the spray is that it is so light on the hair, so there is no danger of spraying too much and making it look limp and greasy (another downside to hair oils).  I don't know if it actually makes my hair healthier, but it definitely makes it look healthier - I have had so many compliments on how much of a good condition it looks in lately.

Below is a photo of me with freshly washed hair, having used the spray prior to drying it. I don't want to blow my own trumpet or anything, but I can't believe how glossy and healthy my hair looks after using this product.

You can purchase Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri-Wheat Leave In Conditioner from Feel Unique for £11.05 - a really good price for such a quality product in my opinion. It is also 250ml and seems set to last me quite some time.

Mundane Boots Haul

As the title would suggest, this is quite a dull haul from Boots. I tweeted the other day that I always spend so much money in Boots whenever I go in there, and somebody replied asking for my latest haul so I thought why not - even if it's not interesting, at least it shows some products I continuously buy.

Cutex Nourishing Nail Polish Remover - I love this stuff, it smells like cocoa butter and doesn't make my nails (and the skin around it) feel dry and stripped after using it. At £2.15 a bottle it's cheap as chips and it lasts me a good two months or so.

Nivea Creme Soft Shower Creme - Again, another favourite of mine. I'm not sure why I love it so much, it isn't nothing special but it just smells so clean and fresh. This is probably my tenth bottle!

Garnier Fresh Essentials Eye Make Up Remover - This is the only eye make-up remover I have found that is like water in consistency (no oil here!) yet removes every trace of eye make-up. It's not ideal for waterproof mascara, but it removes everything else including stubborn liquid liner. I can't even imagine how many bottles of this stuff I've gone through.

No7 Beautiful Skin Quick Thinking Wipes - I'll be honest, I've never used these wipes before and I'm not at all a 'wipes person'. I always remove my make-up with oil cleansers, however I like to have a handy pack of face wipes in the house for travel and for nights where I really cannot be bothered to drag myself to the sink. I used a No7 £5 voucher for these so they cost just £2 - bargainous :)

No7 Fanomenal Masara - Yet another No7 £5 off voucher purchase! I was originally going to buy the Exquisite Curl mascara that everyone seems to rave about, but the No7 sale assistant showed me the brand new Fanomenal mascara and somehow twisted my leg in to buying this instead. I have to say, I'm absolutely loving it after trying it out today. Review to follow!

Radox Spa 'Soothe' Bath Soak - I like to have some bubble bath in for when I run out of Lush products, and I have to say this is a lovely alternative. It has Neroli oil in it so it smells gorgeous (mix of floral and fruity) and you only need the smallest drop for heaps of bubbles.

Have you shopped at Boots lately?

MAC Speed Dial Lipstick

You may have noticed lately that I am doing a lot of lipstick posts. I decided to start frequently blogging about individual lipsticks from my make-up collection because I personally find it helpful to find a blog post that is focused on a certain lipstick when I am researching whether I want to buy it or not.

In the spotlight today is one of my favourite lipsticks, Speed Dial from MAC.

Speed Dial is a very interesting shade to me, because although it is undeniably a blue-based pink, it also has that golden sheen with a slight yellowness to it. I think this is what makes it so great - it can be wearable for people with either warm or cool skins - quite a rare quality for pink lipstick I'm sure you'll all agree. Usually I run a mile from baby pinks, but as I said, the unique undertone to this means I find it easy to wear. It also helps that this is the wonderful cremesheen formula, and so it feels comfortable on the lips, not highlighting any dryness or imperfections. The colour pay off is good, it is almost opaque but not quite - I went over it three times to get the opacity shown above.
If I had to sum up the shade briefly, I would say bubblegum pink.

Have you tried Speed Dial?

Nail Essentials

Lately I have become a bit of a nail addict, I mean don't get me wrong... I've always had a ridiculous nail polish collection and I've always enjoyed doing my nails, however lately I have become obsessed! And although nail polish shades will come and go, I have some essentials that always stick with me and I thought that I would share them on my blog :)

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Anti-Chip Top Coat
This is such an outstanding product, I can't believe it doesn't get more recognition. It works just as good as the famous Seche Vite, but for less than half the price! It makes my nails glossy and it dries them in an instant! I would recommend you limiting activity for around 2 minutes after application, however you are pretty much good to go straight away. Perfect for those last minute nail painting jobs!
I have to add that I think Sally Hansen makes wonderful top coats in general - I'm also a huge fan of Mega Shine.

OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener
This product acts as my base coat and nail strengthener in one. I have terribly weak nails which peel very easily at the tips, but since I started using this product 6 months ago I have seen a major improvement! I can't imagine using anything else as my base coat now.

Nails Inc Vitamin E Cuticle Oil Pen
I'm sure there are lots of good cuticle oils on the market, but for me this Nails Inc one is the best because 1) it smells amazing, 2) it's really compact and portable, 3) it soaks in very quickly. I like to keep one in my handbag to apply on the go, and one by the side of my bed to apply at night.

What are your nail product essentials? I'd love to know!

May 2012 Empties

So I decided to hop on the monthly empties post bandwagon. I love seeing what other bloggers have used up each month and I think it is quite interesting to see not just what someone buys. but what someone uses up - a sign of a good product perhaps?

Anyway, on to what I have used up in May...

  • Batiste Boho Dry Shampoo
  • John Frieda Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Purple Shampoo (absolutely love this stuff!)
  • The Body Shop Vanilla Body Lotion (my favourite body lotion)
  • The Body Shop Shea Body Scrub
  • Nails Inc Foot Exfoliator
  • He-Shi Body Scrub
  • Garnier Fresh Essentials Grape Water Eye Make-Up Remover (another favourite!)

I think I did pretty good this month, I didn't think I used products up that often so saving them up for this post has been a bit of an eye opener in a good way.
Also check out the cute basket I have been storing them in - I got it in an Illamasqua goodie bag a few months back and I'm glad I finally have something to use it for!

Nars Sin Blusher

The Nars blusher in Sin has long been on my wish list. One of my favourite bloggers, Holly, has frequently raved about so I just knew it had to be mine. I decided to just go for it and buy it when ASOS had 20% off beauty a few weeks back, Nars is a pretty pricey brand so I couldn't say no to a discount eh?!

I have to say, I have been totally obsessed with Sin and have worn it almost every day since it arrived! It is such a gorgeous berry-mauve tonted colour with a slight sheen that I find very flattering on the cheeks. It warms up pale skin really well without looking over the toop. I also find it works with nearly all of my eyeshadow and lipsticks, so I don't even have to work around it. On top of being a beautiful colour, I find it also applies the nicest out of all the other Nars blushers I own. It is so pigmented so I just lightly sweep it on the applies of my cheeks - you definitely need a light hand with it to avoid the clown look haha.

Have you tried Sin? What is your favourite Nars blusher? Torrid is next on my list!

May 2012 Beauty Favourites

Here are my beauty favourites for May in video form. It feels so strange not to be writing blog posts for these  monthly favourites any more, but I have decided to write up a monthly empties post instead. So I will film the favourites and blog about the empties :-)

Essie Watermelon

Ever since Boots started selling Essie I have been going absolutely mad for their nail polishes. I seriously can't even take a trip to Boots without ending up at the Essie stand!

Recently I picked up Essie Watermelon (after much deliberation - so much choice, how to choose?!) and I have been absolutely loving it, so I thought I would blog about it - especially as I haven't ever seen any one else mention it.

This photo is from day 3 of wearing it - has a tiny bit of tip wear sorry!

Watermelon, as the name would suggest, is a very bright berry pink... much like a watermelon itself! I think it can look red in some lights but it definitely has that touch of pink to it. It is perfect for summer and I have been sporting it in both my fingers and toes. Application was a dream, it was opaque in just one coat but I went with 2 coats anyway. The wear time for this polish was really good - around 4 days until it chipped. I removed it on day 5 which I think is pretty good going, especially as I always chip my nails like the day after applying it! I have to say I am really impressed with these Essie polishes - I never got along with them in the past but the new wide brush definitely makes application a lot more easier.

I picked up Turquoise and Caicos a few days ago, I will be applying that tonight :-)

Have you got any other Essie suggestions for me?

OOTD 2nd June 2012

Seeing as I did a face of the day post yesterday, I figured it would be quite fitting to follow on with an outfit of the day post today. This is in no way a fashion blog and of course I don't consider myself 'fashionable', but I have had good responses from doing OOTD posts in the past.
I have to apologise for my shoddy attempt at this - I had to get my mum to take the photo and she didn't manage to even get my feet in haha.

So here is what I wore to the cinema yesterday evening...

Blouse - Topshop (v old!)
Skirt - Topshop
Oversized cardigan - Topsop
90 Den Tights - Accessorize
Watch - Michael Kors Rose Gold Chronographic
Shoes - Tory Burch Reva Ballet Flats (not in shot)

I just threw this outfit together on a whim. I chose one of my old favourites blouses and tucked it in to my new basic black A-line skirt from Topshop, I think it looked pretty decent.

Let me know if you'd like more outfit posts.

FOTD 01/06/2012

Hello everyone!

I haven't done a face of the day post in a very long time, so today before I left the house I decided to snap some photos for my blog. My make-up is nothing fancy today, just quick and simple with a pop of colour!

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24h in Beige Albatre 01
MAC Studio Fix Concealer NC20
Nars Blusher in Sin
Benefit High Beam

MAC Lingering Eyebrow Pencil
MAC Painterly Paint Pot (all over the lid)
MAC Wedge Eyeshadow (crease to lightly define)
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (blended in the inner corner and on the brow bone)
Collection 2000 Felt Tip Eyeliner (not sure of the exact name sorry!)
Benefit They're Real Mascara

Illamasqua Medium Pencil in Feisty
MAC Vegas Volt Lipstick

Loving a bit of Vegas Volt recently, a bright lip can really add something to an otherwise plain look. Please let me know if you'd like a review on any of the products used, I'd be more than happy to - reviews are my favourite post to write :-)
